It's a pretty safe assumption that most of us desire to live the American Dream. Every single one of us has a different definition of the American Dream, but one thing has become very clear in the last decade or so Working for someone else in a job will NOT get you to where you want to be.

The wealthy people in the world today have a few things in common... They own their own business, or business for that matter, and they are in complete control of their own destiny. No one tells them what to do. So the real question is not whether owning a business is the right choice, but deciding whether to open a traditional business or buy a franchise operation.

In this article, I'm going to break down 3 characteristics that of entrepreneurs that lean towards owning a franchise instead of starting a traditional business. So let's get to it.

1. Your aversion to risk - One of the biggest fears of entrepreneurs is determining how much you're willing to lay on the line, if not all of it. With traditional business, you can win big, but you can lose big too. If you look at some of the wealthiest people today, they aren't franchise owners. They are traditional business owners that might have a franchise system underneath them.

The amount of risk is predictable and usually lower when you own a franchise. It just is. However, if you have grand visions of being a multi-millionaire, the reality is you're going to have to own multiple franchise operations to realize that goal. So bottom line is if you don't want to lay it all on the line and win big with 1 business, a franchise might be a good choice for you.

2. Your creativity, or lack thereof - Another aspect of business is all the different components that go into running a business. For instance, you have marketing, sales, operations, inventory, human resources, and so much more. Why creativity is a factor is because with traditional business, you have to pretty much do everything on your own. If you have a problem, it's up to you to solve it.

On the other hand, in a franchise, you don't need to be that creative because the franchise company will usually handle all aspects where creativity is required. They usually handle all marketing campaigns, they fix the systems if they're broken and they will usually provide solutions to the problems. Therefore, if you're a person who likes to be creative, then a franchise isn't a good fit for you. If you like to take more of a back seat and just do what you do best within the system, go with a franchise.

3. Your comfort level with planning - One of the most common areas entrepreneurs fail in is planning, or the lack thereof. Way too often business owners start a business and they never make a business plan or a marketing plan. They just go to work and hopefully they learn on the way without making too many mistakes. In a traditional business model, that's the 'kiss of death'.

In a franchise, most of the planning is usually mapped out for you. The business plan of the franchise and the marketing plan is usually already done. The systems are in place because you're buying a system with a franchise. So if you're the kind of entrepreneur where planning isn't your strong point, maybe a franchise is good for you.
